Permalink Reply by Rich Mbariket on January 17, 2012 at 9:25pm I just don't follow Streamys IAWTV. Just found out she won AGAIN today. These folks never cease to amaze me.
Permalink Reply by tbonepearson on January 18, 2012 at 6:48am You should watch the awards Rich on their youtube channel and then I'll have you on TWIW to tell us your thoughts :)
Permalink Reply by Rich Mbariket on January 18, 2012 at 2:18pm Sorry, ain't happening. :)
Permalink Reply by Sal Amato on January 23, 2012 at 1:58pm that's what i noticed. Pathetically unprofessional, phone calls with people way too lost for me to even spend a minute more of my time discussing.
Reminds me of the clique's in high school, after a while you either stopped paying attention to them or you just banged all their heads off lockers.
Permalink Reply by MrTerrible on January 18, 2012 at 10:10am Hey Guys,
I get it. I have sour grapes too. But let's not get upset and quit without making a boycott mean something. Otherwise we're just having a tantrum that no one will actually know we are having or care about for that matter.
Unless IAWTV changes the voting where you can not nominate or vote for a project you have any involvement in, their whole thing is just a system where the guy with the most cash wins.
What if we pressure the award shows to change how they do their voting? If we all, 1900+ members of WSN sent them an email saying thank you but you need to change the voting structure or we'll all boycott next year... they'd change. Also, if we told them they had to post Full Entry Lists w/Web Address on their site so we all get some exposure, they would. Just saying.
Any win that promotes Webseries, its infrastructure and sets us a viable cash cow is good for us all. It helps to make us a viable option for funding agencies etc. So let's all thank Ms. Day for putting our fledgling industry on the money map and work to change the system for the better.
Permalink Reply by Chad Media on January 18, 2012 at 2:28pm I've been in the academy for over a year and I wish it were that easy to persuade this lot. There's a few good ones in there but the others seem hell bent on locking anyone not in the LA bubble/mixer crowd out. I think the strongest message we can possibly send is to not give them any money, (for submitting or joining,) and existing just fine without them. We don't need the bubble and they clearly don't want us.
Permalink Reply by MrTerrible on January 18, 2012 at 2:52pm Great insight Chad, Thanks!!!
But just not paying or taking part? They'll never know you weren't submitting and never care. I dunno. I don't have time to organize a revolt so I'm not going to suggest anything.
Permalink Reply by Elisar Cabrera on January 19, 2012 at 2:28am There's actually another thing linking the winners which I pointed out in my livestream review of it yesterday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqr6JDB78Ag if you are interested) is that
other than an award for Anyone But Me (and the hosted shows categories) all the web series winners are Geek/Sci-Fi/Fantasy series - even Best Male Comedy Actor which wasn't for a sci-fi-ish series went to an actor known for one (Jeff Lewis).
So this perhaps also gives a clear indication of a particular taste of most voting members.
The main problem with these awards is not the winners though, its the nomination process.
To be truly representative of the web series industry in the US then it cannot be a self selected nomination process. So what it became was the IAWTV Member Awards.
What should have happened was rather than members and non-members ask to pay per category to submit t0 for their own series only - which then limits nomination considerations purely to ones who have still a marketing budget to spend on this process - every member should have been asked to say submit a list of 10 nominees per category and not include themselves.
You then add up the top 5 choices per category and what you have is a better representation of what members believe should be nominated and for your own series if you are nominated then the nomination has come from your peers.
Permalink Reply by Rich Mbariket on January 19, 2012 at 11:22am Love your show Elisar. Reminds me of Diggnation without the beer. :) Just featured the latest episode on WSN. You need to throw in some beer action to give the show more personality. Love, love, love what you're doing!
Permalink Reply by Elisar Cabrera on January 20, 2012 at 9:15am Cheers Rich,
Sean drives home after so alcohol would look weird with only one of us partaking - we tried to fake champagne in the early days.
Next mission is to work out live video calls.
