What Are Your Thoughts On The $5M Youtube Grant Program?

What's up WEB SERIES NETWORK,

I was just wondering, what are your thoughts on the Youtube Grant Program designed to pour five million dollars into the production and marketing budgets of a qualified group of Youtube partners, some of whom are web series creators, but largely Youtubers?

Here's the article.

One thing about it is that the creators have to pay back the "grant" out of their view revenue. That means that it is effectively an advance rather than just pouring money in. Still, hopefully it leads to a lot of creative videos. For anyone that produces content that generates large views it is a good thing. For web series producers it just points out once again that they need to produce content that engages the YouTube audience and also market their shows better so they generate the large views that will allow them to benefit financially on YouTube.
The Youtubers definitely don't need the money. Their production cost is minimal compared to the web series creator making scripted content (which most do). Then again, you will need a sizable amount of subscribers and viewership to be invited to join the Youtube Partner Program (which most web series creators don't have) and should work on increasing to improve their chances of qualifying for the program.

Still. The advance grant is better than no grant and far better than content creators raising "guilt-trip" funds through the Kickstarters of the world. Plus, I like that Youtube isn't giving away free money. What this program should teach emerging web series creators is that as creative as our industry might seem on the surface, below its 100% business.
I am always impressed at how hard YouTubers work to build up their channels, add subscriptions and market their channels. Whether its someone who has just reached their first 100, 1000 or 1 million there is a certain energy there that is just rare to see from web series creators. When you see someone appreciate your support you are 1000x more likely to help them out. So, I think the up and coming YouTubers will be the big winners here. They can use the money to improve their video quality with some expectation of a pay off. Until web series creators realize that "build it and they will come" just will not work without the use of front page autoplays (which are questionable views) they are not going to benefit from what is potentially a powerful program.
You're so right on.
