What are your top 3 favorite web series at the moment?

- besides your own.

Let's have discussion about the shows that have achieved one or more points most of us are working towards:

  • Good content
  • Quality production
  • Good marketing/ general awareness of show's existence
  • Enough income generated to at least recover the cost of creating the series

Someone did ask this question 2 years ago. I think a lot has changed since 2010 and its time to update. I hope this discussion has more people share their thoughts which will lead us to breaking down successful shows for elements we can apply to our own productions.

This doesn't answer your question but I like opinion-programming (based on topics I'm passionate about) and reality shows. Independent scripted web series aren't consistent enough to follow. And currently, branded entertainment is too superficial for my liking since they focus more on marketing the brand than telling a compelling story and returning multiple seasons.

Agreed.

I'm one of the few on WSN who dabble in reality based series though I am planning my first jump into scripted content. I've been paying attention very closely.

Rich, as the founder of WSN, do you know of any possible solutions to improve the consistency of independent scripted web series? I mean that's the bulk of people on WSN. I'm sure most people here are not aware that you feel this way - at all.

It does make me feel very uneasy that you can't name three opinion/reality shows but maybe we have stumbled across something in your words.

It could be that the audience for indie scripted shows online has always been small and reality based programming is the king of online media because it relates to real world info and the internet was built for spreading real world info. I have much more thinking to do.

1. Creative Has Nothing For You: Funny, innovative and part in parcel with the most ground breaking developments in the wrestling industry in years. Not to mention the best branded show in the business today.

2. Heroes of the North: The only show to use the comic book look in a web series and do it right. Love those ladies! :)

3. Kids/Teens/Elders React: Very fun show that out does Ray William Johnson in terms of finding wild and wacky viral vids and lets kids and old folks react to them.

Honorable Mention: Spellfury, Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Thanks Chad! I can't promise that I will get to all of these shows by the end of the week but I will check out the main three and hopefully get a breakdown going. Randomness - I LOVE ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD! But it didn't make my top pick either. Interesting.

James didn't make my list because the AVGN show has been largely inactive as James finishes the AVGN Movie. (He's done his other projects sporatically to keep content flowing but AVGN has been on hiatus for the most part.) But he has been the most successful of all in many ways.

Hard to answer this without thinking your own series... lol. But I'd say we must not count AT&T's or anything where Hollywood or big money, A listers, etc. are involved (IMO).

I think also we forget to ask about length of episode. Short just doesn't work for character development or story, we don't care about anything  (i.e. Electric City -- again, a "Hollywood" production of sorts).

Cal,

Speaking of short form content not working for character development, read this article and comments: http://webseriesnetwork.com/profiles/blogs/the-business-of-web-seri...

And feel free to opine.

Hey Rich! How are you my friend? Sorry I'd been away, so busy with my fulltime job and the web series. lol. Thanks. I'll post my reply over there :)

I'm well cal, thanks for asking and always good to see you. Hope alls good on western front. :)

Good to hear Rich! Everything is going well with the series, have 3 awards from this year for my pilot, entered more festivals recently. Kinda bittersweet time as my dad passed away in June :(  A co-worker of mine at my job recently passed away as well. Yin and Yang I guess, for everything that makes you happy, something else can make you sad at the same time. 'Tis life, and how we react to it, eh?  Thanks again, hope to be able to post more often, but the site looks even better! Keep it up :)  Have a great night.

Appreciate it, the images were distracting and all text seems to be working fine. Feels more like a dialogue now than a "news" site. And sorry for your loss. Welcome back. :)
