When to release trailer and/or teaser?

Hi all,

I'm new to WSN and I'm currently in the pre production stage of my first web series, which will be out later this year.

I was just wondering how long before the release of my first episode should I release the trailer and/or teaser? (We're still not sure yet if we'll only do one or both.) What do people usually do? Is it good to have a long build up, or just a short time in between?

(Sorry if this question has been tackled before in the forum. I did a search but found nothing.)

I'd do both.  Never can have too much hype  : )   I'd wait until you actually have something to show though.  Sometimes people make a trailer before they've even filmed anything, and that never really makes the show look legit.  Make sure whatever you show is good enough quality that it reflects your finished product.  If all you have are a couple of still photos from a test shoot, don't make a trailer with it. Instead, release them as photos labeled "test shoot photos" so people don't get the wrong impression and shrug off your show.    Nothing worse than seeing some still photos pan across a video with the words "Coming soon..."  : )

congratulations on diving in to your first web series!  

If you're looking to gain sponsors/funding, a teaser wouldn't necessarily hurt.  If anything, it could give a solid introduction to the premise of what your show is all about, and the likelihood of someone getting involved could increase.

There are no rules for success for webseries or we'd all be rich by now.  lol.  However, hype is good.  Look to what has worked in the past for film and tv.  Look to what has worked for webseries that are in your genre.  Try to come up with your marketing plan to get the word out.  It's about hits.  Do whatever it takes.  Reviews by important people are good.  They can fit into all your PR kits and paperwork.  Trailers are great but have a few and build it up.  Push push push.  Anything anyone says, ever, is great.  Good luck and I look forward to seeing it!

Thanks guys for the info! I think we'll opt for doing both a trailer and a teaser then - seems best. I'm writing up a marketing schedule at the moment and will start delegating to our marketing team soon - there's lots to do :)

The great thing about the web is there aren't any rules.  If you just started it doesn't hurt to do a teaser.  If the idea is to build up a fan base, don't wait till your series comes out to do it.  It will take alot of time to build it up so use it.  Yeah, I'm one of those that put still photos together and a coming soon sign at the end of my first teaser.  But don't let anyone deter you from creating what you want.  I'm planning to have my premeire in the summer and I put out a teaser a year ago and a trailer two months ago.  I've seen trailers for shows that have never come out and for some that came out a week later, so just do what's right for you.

The market we are in is pretty much brand new at our level

and we are all test pilots at this point so to be honest I don't

think there are any correct answers. I shot the whole first season

of Just One More and would upload pictures from on set to our facebook page.

When we were done shooting and started getting into post production editing

It is just a teaser and not ment to give out any of the plot.

It was not color corrected or stabilized but it was enough to keep a buzz

going and buy us some more time to make a real trailer and get a better

edit to our show. At this point we are considering making a short 59 miinute

movie out of our show for the HIFF which is our local film festival. Then after

that premiere we will go for the on-line web-series.
