Okay, so I just got off the phone with someone that I happen to be a huge fan of their energy and spirit. Throughout the entire conversation they are trying to convince me that what I am doing is totally wrong (while trying to get me to bring my content to their site). I am being told that what I'm producing will not sustain because it goes against the standards that's laid down by the industry. "You can't produce a web show that long . . . no one will sit and watch it."
Let's get one thing straight off the back . . . people will watch anything that they find ENTERTAINING!! My response to the entire "you should do it the way "THEY" say" is this. Of course "Hollywood" is going to set a standard because they MUST separate themselves from the indies (I mean the real indies not those $10M films).
Hollywood want you and the public to believe that if you do not spend a certain amount of money than what you produce isn't good enough. But here's a little test that I think if you follow their philosophy of "equipment is what makes a great film" you should tryout.
Go to any mall in America and tell people you will give them $20.00 on the spot if they will answer two questions in which there is no wrong answer. Then ask them the following two questions.
1) What's your favorite movie/television show?
2) Now tell me what camera it was shot on?
I doubt if you've give out a $100.00 total. See here's the reality . . . people (your audience) do not care how it was made as long as it was ENTERTAINING (there goes that word again). Yes, even in this high tech world we live in one thing still has not change in our industry CONTENT IS KING! Though after I've seen what the big studios have been putting out lately maybe that statement is in jeopardy.
So please do not apologize for what equipment you do not have and be proud of what's available to you. (Anyone can make a great film with a $100M dollar budget, but only a serious film maker can do it with only $100.00 total.)
You can make a great project without a red camera, a 50 men crew, and a $2500 editing suite.
So remember this next time someone is telling you how you can't produce a great project without having "_________________" (fill in the blank).
