It depends what you're shooting at the end on the day, I've used a rode video mic plugged straight into my 600D and because of the internal noise made by the camera, you get a hiss. They've corrected this problem in the rode video mic pro, but i'd say the best way to get decent audio is plug a rode mic, into a zoom h1. But if you're shooting a static interview, then lav mic is fine, i have had my share of issues with all.
